MATTERLEY BASIN (Gran Bretagna) 05 ottobre 2024 – La 77a edizione del Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations ha preso il via oggi sul circuito di Matterley Basin , con le gare di qualificazione RAM che hanno determinato le scelte per le gare principali di domani, nonché l’ammissione dei primi 19 team a tali gare e non alla temuta finale B!
I vincitori delle gare delle classi MXGP, MX2 e Open hanno portato i loro team tra i primi tre della classifica generale: il recentemente riconfermato campione del mondo MXGP Jorge Prado ha vinto la classe MXGP, l’ex due volte campione del mondo Tom Vialle ha vinto la manche di qualificazione MX2 RAM e il campione AMA Supercross Jett Lawrence si è aggiudicato la vittoria nella classe Open.
Grazie all’eccellente supporto di Ruben Fernandez, la squadra spagnola si è guadagnata la prima scelta davanti ai campioni in carica , la Francia, e ai secondi classificati dell’anno scorso , l’Australia.
Dietro di loro, il Team Gran Bretagna ha ottenuto uno splendido quarto posto davanti al pubblico di casa, mentre il Team Germania ha gestito brillantemente l’ultima scelta sul cancello, concludendo la giornata al quinto posto.
Come previsto, la formazione ha dato vita ad alcune battaglie epiche tra diverse leggende moderne del Motocross, offrendoci una prospettiva allettante per le gare principali di domani!
Dopo la conclusione della loro battaglia durata un anno per il campionato mondiale MXGP, Tim Gajser del Team HRC e il talismano della Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing Jorge Prado hanno fatto il loro ingresso nella veloce prima curva di Matterley nelle prime due posizioni. Prado era stato il più veloce nella sessione di prove libere del mattino e ha subito preso il comando alla seconda curva, mentre Gajser ha dovuto vedersela con il suo compagno di squadra HRC Hunter Lawrence, il detentore della targa numero 1 del Kawasaki Racing Team Romain Febvre e la Standing Construct Honda di Alberto Forato!
Jeffrey Herlings si è subito lanciato nella mischia, sfoggiando l’insolito numero 52 sulla sua moto Red Bull KTM Factory Racing , ma poco dopo aver superato Forato per il quinto posto, l’olandese è caduto in curva dopo le onde della GoPro e ha dovuto affrontare una grande rimonta.
Dall’esterno del cancello, a causa della scelta finale della posizione di partenza da parte del suo team, Ken Roczen ha combattuto con la consueta intensità sulla sua HEP Motorsports/Progressive Suzuki per superare Forato per il quinto posto prima della fine del primo giro.
Mentre Prado sfrecciava in testa con il suo stile familiare, “The Bullet” stava caricando attraverso il gruppo. Dopo aver superato la macchina JM Honda Racing di Brent van Doninck al quarto giro, poi di nuovo Forato un giro dopo, improvvisamente Herlings si è trovato sotto pressione dal pilota che molti considerano il suo equivalente negli Stati Uniti: Eli Tomac della Monster Energy Star Yamaha! Incredibilmente, il duo altamente decorato ha poi raggiunto Roczen e i fan hanno potuto assistere a tre dei più famosi piloti fuoristrada dell’ultimo decennio che si sono battuti per la quinta posizione! Jeffrey è passato a tre giri dalla fine, ma Kenny è riuscito a tenere a bada Eli per il sesto posto. Forato è arrivato ottavo davanti al pilota svedese JK Racing Yamaha Isak Gifting e al pilota del Kawasaki Racing Team Jeremy Seewer, il cui team svizzero aveva pescato una scelta di partenza solo un posto meglio della Germania!
Tuttavia, in vetta c’è stato un ultimo colpo di scena: Hunter Lawrence è caduto in alcune difficili buche dal terzo posto nell’ultimo giro, regalando a Febvre il terzo posto, ma Prado ha vinto con oltre cinque secondi e mezzo di vantaggio su Gajser, rendendo l’inizio perfetto per il Team Spagna!
Jorge Prado: “Felice per la squadra spagnola, ora sono primo in classifica per domani, quindi anche la scelta del primo cancello è importante qui. Ho avuto una buona partenza perché i ragazzi arrivavano veloci dall’esterno, ma sono riuscito a controllarla e ad avere una buona accelerazione alla seconda curva. La pista era piuttosto incerta con così tante buche, è stato pazzesco. Ho dovuto essere molto concentrato per tutto il tempo e non potevo permettermi errori, quindi a un certo punto ho perso un anteriore, sono quasi caduto, ma per il resto è stata una bella gara, mi sono divertito, adoro le buche, quindi vediamo come andrà domani”

Anche se è stato lontano dalle gare MX2 per due anni da quando ha vinto il suo secondo titolo mondiale, Tom Vialle ha dimostrato di poter ancora realizzare un grande Fox Holeshot per la Red Bull KTM Factory Racing all’inizio della MX2 Ram Qualifying Heat, mentre dietro di lui si estendeva un mare di moto blu con Cooper Webb e Max Anstie sulle loro Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha affiancati dall’adolescente Karlis Reisulis sulla sua Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 !
Tuttavia, il pilota ospite del Team HRC Kyle Webster voleva stupire al suo debutto europeo e ha fatto una grande mossa alla terza curva per conquistare il secondo posto! Purtroppo per lui, tre curve dopo ha perso l’equilibrio ed è caduto su una sponda interna, scendendo al quindicesimo posto. Un’ulteriore caduta e recupero lo hanno riportato al tredicesimo posto al traguardo, ma il Team Australia deve essere contento di avere il ritmo per sostenere i fratelli Lawrence nelle gare principali di domani.
Webb, su una moto da 250 cc a lui sconosciuta, è sceso fino al settimo posto, ma Anstie era in movimento, mantenendo il secondo posto davanti al duo del Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing formato da Kay de Wolf e Lucas Coenen, che avevano sfruttato la prima scelta del Team Belgio per riprendersi da un brutto spunto al cancello e salvare una buona posizione nel primo giro.
Al quarto giro i primi due del campionato mondiale MX2 di quest’anno avevano entrambi superato Anstie, ma Vialle era già molto più avanti di loro. Simon Laengenfelder aveva lottato fin dal povero cancelletto di partenza tedesco ed era arrivato quinto per la Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing a metà gara. Al settimo giro, ha fatto uno straordinario sorpasso all’esterno sul campione della Monster Energy Triumph Racing Camden McLellan, che stava cercando di trascinare il Sudafrica in una posizione di qualificazione.
Nello stesso giro, De Wolf è uscito dal secondo posto, liberando Coenen, il più veloce nelle prove libere, per fare a pezzi il circuito all’inseguimento di Vialle. Dietro Webb, Mikkel Haarup ha lottato da una brutta partenza per arrivare ottavo per Monster Energy Triumph Racing, con la WZ Racing KTM di Oriol Oliver al nono posto e il campione del mondo MX2 2023 della Red Bull Factory Racing KTM Andrea Adamo al decimo.
Coenen si è avvicinato senza pietà a Vialle negli ultimi giri, ma il belga ha sbagliato leggermente un solco in contropendenza ed è caduto a due giri dalla fine, negandogli la possibilità di migliorare il secondo posto. Laengenfelder ha superato Max Anstie all’ultimo giro per aggiudicarsi il terzo posto, con De Wolf quinto davanti a McLellan.
La vittoria di Vialle ha posto la squadra francese in una posizione di leadership fin dalle prime due gare, davanti a una sorprendente Germania e alla Spagna, terza.
Tom Vialle: “Ero emozionato per questo. Ero tipo, Lucas, ovviamente, è l’uomo del campionato. Lui e Kai sono molto vicini, e io ero tipo, ok, ho fatto il tiro duro, e voglio davvero vincere quella manche. Lucas mi stava raggiungendo un po’, e poi ho spinto di nuovo negli ultimi tre giri, e ho potuto vincere, quindi è stato davvero bello iniziare il weekend in quel modo. Voglio dire, le qualifiche non sono sempre… non è lì che vinci, ma è davvero importante. È piuttosto buono”.

Con un passaggio tardivo alla classe MX Open, Jett Lawrence del Team HRC è stato il più veloce nelle prove libere davanti al pilota Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Maxime Renaux. Tuttavia, pochi avrebbero previsto che il Fox Holeshot sarebbe stato conquistato dal campione brasiliano Fabio Aparecido dos Santos sulla sua Yamaha Monster Energy Geração !
Tuttavia, il sudamericano non si è dimostrato un inseguitore facile, dato che lo spagnolo del Team HRC, Ruben Fernandez, partito veloce, ha impiegato quasi un giro per superarlo, mentre Lawrence e Renaux hanno superato Dos Santos prima della fine del primo giro completo.
Lawrence stava correndo con il suo stile e il suo flow abituali, e ha fatto sembrare il sorpasso su Fernandez per il comando, in fondo al salto in salita più grande del circuito, un gioco da ragazzi. Da lì, Lawrence, Fernandez e Renaux hanno mantenuto la posizione, con la battaglia che si preparava alle loro spalle!
Il pilota della Crendon Tru7 Honda Conrad Mewse, con la gente del posto tra la folla che lo incitava, aveva superato la stella della Fantic Factory Racing Glenn Coldenhoff per il sesto posto al secondo giro, e si era avvicinato a Dos Santos, che aveva già il pilota della Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Andrea Bonacorsi che gli dava fastidio! Il brasiliano ha perso entrambe le posizioni nello spazio di due curve, prima che un Mewse ispirato superasse l’italiano un giro dopo! Il britannico si stava godendo le condizioni tecniche e la sua quarta posizione ha messo la nazione ospitante al quarto posto per la giornata!
Alla fine, la stella del Team USA della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Aaron Plessinger si è battuto fino al sesto posto dietro a Bonacorsi, davanti alla Schmicker Racing KTM del norvegese Cornelius Toendel e alla TEM JP253 Racing KTM dello sloveno Jan Pancar.
Coldenhoff ha avuto un problema meccanico che lo ha fatto scendere in classifica, ma i Paesi Bassi hanno comunque conquistato il sesto posto nella giornata davanti a Slovenia, Belgio, USA e Italia. Dopo le sue gesta da holeshot, Dos Santos ha concluso al decimo posto, con il Brasile che si è qualificato per le gare principali al 16° posto.
Jett Lawrence è apparso incredibilmente veloce in questa divisione, ma lo scontro davvero avvincente avverrà nella gara finale del programma di domani, quando tutti i 450 uomini saranno insieme!
Promette di essere uno spettacolo avvincente su un circuito magnifico, quindi non perdetevi questa incredibile giornata di gare al Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations per il Chamberlain Trophy!
Jett Lawrence: “Alla partenza, il mio pulsante holeshot è sceso in basso. Quindi ho un po’ sbagliato la partenza. Ma sì, seguire Fernandez per il primo, quanto è durato? Dieci, cinque minuti, direi. Quindi è andata bene. Ho avuto un po’ di battaglia al primo giro, andando avanti e indietro. È stato divertente. La pista è piuttosto insidiosa. Non puoi assolutamente ignorarla. È divertente semplicemente saltellare, rimbalzare come un canguro, potremmo dire. Abbiamo vinto. Quindi bel P3, come l’anno scorso. Speriamo di avere qualche partenza migliore per domani”.

VICTORY FOR PRADO, VIALLE, & JETT LAWRENCE AS SPAIN TOP THE RAM QUALIFYING RACES AT THE MONSTER ENERGY FIM MXoN
MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain) 05 October 2024 – The 77th Edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations burst into life today at the Matterley Basin circuit, as the RAM Qualifying Heats took place to decide the gate picks for tomorrow’s main races, as well as putting the top 19 teams into those races and not the dreaded B-Final!
The winners of the MXGP, MX2, and Open class races each helped their teams into the top three overall, as recently re-crowned MXGP World Champion Jorge Prado took the MXGP class win, former double World Champion Tom Vialle the MX2 RAM Qualifying Heat, and AMA Supercross Champion Jett Lawrence easing his way to the Open class victory.
With great back-up from Ruben Fernandez, Team Spain have earned themselves the first gate pick ahead of defending Champions Team France and last-year’s runners-up Team Australia.
Behind them, Team Great Britain produced a brilliant fourth place in front of their home crowd, with Team Germany dealing brilliantly with the last pick on the gate to finish the day in fifth.
As expected, the line-up produced some epic battles between several modern-day legends of Motocross to give us a tantalising prospect for the main races tomorrow!
Fresh from the conclusion of their year-long battle for the MXGP World Championship, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing talisman Jorge Prado fired around the fast first corner at Matterley in the top two positions. Prado had been fastest in the morning Free Practice session, and immediately took the lead into the second corner, as Gajser had to deal with his fellow HRC rider Hunter Lawrence, Kawasaki Racing Team’s number 1 plate holder Romain Febvre, and the Standing Construct Honda of Alberto Forato!
Immediately into the fray, wearing the unfamiliar #52 on his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine, was Jeffrey Herlings, but shortly after passing Forato for fifth, the Dutchman fell in the corner after the GoPro waves and gave himself a big fightback to take on.
From the very outside of the gate due to his team drawing the final choice of start position, Ken Roczen had fought through with customary intensity on his HEP Motorsports/Progressive Suzuki to pass Forato for fifth before the end of the first lap.
As Prado streaked away out front in his familiar style, “The Bullet” was charging back through the pack. Passing the JM Honda Racing machine of Brent van Doninck on lap four, then Forato again a lap later, suddenly Herlings was under pressure from the rider many consider to be his stateside equivalent: Monster Energy Star Yamaha’s Eli Tomac! Amazingly, the highly decorated duo then caught up to Roczen, and fans were treated to three of the most famous off-road racers of the last decade battling for fifth position! Jeffrey got through with three laps to go, but Kenny was able to hold off Eli for sixth. Forato took eighth ahead of Swedish JK Racing Yamaha rider Isak Gifting and the Kawasaki Racing Team pilot Jeremy Seewer, whose Swiss team had drawn a starting choice only one place better than Germany!
There was one last twist at the top, however, as Hunter Lawrence fell in some difficult ruts from third on the final lap, gifting Febvre third place, but Prado won by over five and a half seconds from Gajser, making it the perfect start for Team Spain!
Jorge Prado: “Happy for team Spain, sitting first now in the in the classification for tomorrow so number one gate pick is also important over here. I had a good start as the guys were coming in fast from the outside but I could control it and have a good breaking into turn two. The track was quite sketchy with so many ruts it was crazy. I had to be very focused all the time and couldn’t afford any mistakes so I lost a front at one point I almost went down but for the rest it was a good good race I had fun I love the ruts so let’s see how it goes tomorrow”

He may have been away from MX2 racing for the two years since he won his second world title, but Tom Vialle proved that he can still pull a great Fox Holeshot for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing at the start of the MX2 Ram Qualifying Heat, while behind him it was a sea of blue bikes as Cooper Webb and Max Anstie on their Monster Energy Star Racing Yamahas were joined by the teenage Karlis Reisulis on his Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 machine!
However, Team HRC guest rider Kyle Webster was looking to impress on his European debut and made a great move through the third corner to claim second place! Sadly for him, three corners later he lost balance and fell onto an inside bank, dropping to fifteenth. A further fall and recovery saw him back to thirteenth by the finish, but Team Australia must be pleased that he has the pace to back up the Lawrence brothers in tomorrow’s main races.
Webb, on unfamiliar 250cc machinery, dropped back to an eventual seventh, but Anstie was on the move, holding second ahead of the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing duo Kay de Wolf and Lucas Coenen, who had used Team Belgium’s first gate pick draw to recover from a poor jump at the gate and salvage a good position on the first lap.
By lap four the top two in the MX2 World Championship this year had both got past Anstie, but Vialle was already a distance ahead of them. Simon Laengenfelder had battled from the poor German start gate and was up to fifth for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing by the halfway point. On lap seven, he pulled a stunning round-the-outside pass on the Monster Energy Triumph Racing hotshot Camden McLellan, who was trying to pull South Africa into a Qualifying position.
On the same lap, De Wolf crashed out of second, freeing up Coenen, the fastest in Free Practice, to tear up the circuit in pursuit of Vialle. Behind Webb, Mikkel Haarup fought through from a bad start to take eighth for Monster Energy Triumph Racing, with Oriol Oliver’s WZ Racing KTM in ninth and Red Bull Factory Racing KTM’s 2023 MX2 World Champion Andrea Adamo in tenth.
Coenen mercilessly closed on Vialle in the closing laps, but the Belgian got an off-camber rut slightly wrong and fell with two laps to go, denying him the chance of improving on second. Laengenfelder made a last lap pass on Max Anstie to claim third, with De Wolf fifth ahead of McLellan.
Vialle’s win put Team France in a leading position from the first two races ahead of a surprising Germany and Spain in third.
Tom Vialle : “was excited for that. I was like, Lucas, obviously, is the man of the championship. Him and Kai are really close, and I was like, okay, I took the hard shot, and I really want to win that moto. Lucas was catching me a little bit, and then I pushed again the last three laps, and I could win so it was really nice to start the weekend like that I mean the qualification are not always… that’s not where you win but it’s really important. That’s pretty good”.

With a late switch to the MX Open class, Team HRC’s Jett Lawrence was fastest in Free Practice ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP pilot Maxime Renaux. However, few would have predicted the Fox Holeshot being taken by Brazilian Champion Fabio Aparecido dos Santos on his Yamaha Monster Energy Geração machine!
The South American proved to be no pushover however, as Team HRC’s Spanish fast starter Ruben Fernandez took nearly a lap to get past, as Lawrence and Renaux also just worked past Dos Santos before the end of the first full circulation.
Lawrence was racing with his customary style and flow, and made the pass on Fernandez for the lead, at the bottom of the biggest uphill jump on the circuit, look like a piece of cake. From there, Lawrence, Fernandez, and Renaux held station, with the battle brewing behind them!
Crendon Tru7 Honda rider Conrad Mewse, with the locals in the crowd urging him on, had passed Fantic Factory Racing star Glenn Coldenhoff for sixth on lap two, and closed in on Dos Santos, who had Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP pilot Andrea Bonacorsi already giving him hassle! The Brazilian lost both positions in the space of two corners, before an inspired Mewse got past the Italian a lap later! The Brit was relishing the technical conditions, and his fourth position put the host nation in fourth for the day!
In the end, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Team USA star Aaron Plessinger fought through to sixth behind Bonacorsi, ahead of the Schmicker Racing KTM of Cornelius Toendel from Norway and the TEM JP253 Racing KTM of Slovenian Jan Pancar.
Coldenhoff had a mechanical issue drop him down the order, but The Netherlands still claimed sixth on the day ahead of Slovenia, Belgium, USA, and Italy. After his holeshot heroics, Dos Santos finished in tenth spot, with Brazil qualifying for the main races in 16th.
Jett Lawrence did look ominously fast in this division, but the truly mouth-watering clash will come in the final race of tomorrow’s programme when all the 450 men are together!

Jett Lawrence: “On the start, my holeshot button came down at the bottom. So I kind of messed up my start a bit. But yeah, following Fernandez for the first, what was it? Ten, five minutes, I would say. So it was good. Got a little bit of a battle the first lap,
going back and forth. It was fun. The track’s pretty tricky. You definitely can’t override it. It’s fun just to kind of hop around, bounce around like a kangaroo, you could say. We got the win. So nice P3, same as last year. Let’s hope we just get some better starts for tomorrow.”
