COZAR (Spagna) 26 settembre 2024 – È tempo che i campioni vengano incoronati in entrambe le classi del Campionato mondiale di motocross MXGP 2024, poiché la sede spagnola di Cozar ospita il 20° e ultimo round della serie, l’ MXGP di Castilla La Mancha!
Prende il nome dalla comunità autonoma senza sbocco sul mare in cui si trova, il circuito fa parte del Circuito Motor Ranch, che si trova a circa 240 km a sud della capitale Madrid e 130 km a ovest della città di Albacete. La sede sarà il 19° circuito in Spagna ad ospitare un Gran Premio di Motocross e il secondo nella regione di Castilla La Mancha dopo Talavera de la Reina . Questa è la nostra terza visita in Spagna questa stagione e l’eroe di casa Jorge Prado ha vinto in entrambi i round precedenti per Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing in MXGP. Kay de Wolf ha vinto in MX2 a intu-Xanadu Arroyomolinos, ma il suo compagno di squadra Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing Lucas Coenen ha vinto la classifica generale a Lugo per l’ MXGP della Galizia a maggio.
Il titolo mondiale MXGP sarà deciso tra il campione del mondo in carica Prado e Tim Gajser del Team HRC, che ha perso la testa della classifica in Cina e ora è a soli sette punti dal suo rivale! Jeffrey Herlings ha una piccola possibilità matematica per la Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, ma un distacco di 48 punti da Prado rende la sua possibilità molto remota.
La lotta lunga un anno per il campionato mondiale MX2 tra l’olandese De Wolf e il belga Lucas Coenen è più serrata di quanto non lo sia stata dalla gara di apertura, con l’inseguitore Coenen che si avvicina con le ultime due vittorie di GP per ridurre il distacco a 36 punti. Come in MXGP, si deciderà all’ultimo giorno del campionato, che peraltro coincide con il 20° compleanno di De Wolf!
Ci saranno altri campioni incoronati a Cozar, poiché il campionato europeo EMX250 ha il suo round finale per decidere la battaglia a tre tra il leader della serie Mathis Valin, il francese sulla Bud Racing Kawasaki, l’italiano Valerio Lata per Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors e l’olandese Cas Valk, che ha appena vinto il campionato britannico MX2 per Gabriel SS24 KTM lo scorso fine settimana! Valin ha un vantaggio di 21 punti su Lata, quindi potrebbe aggiudicarsi il titolo in gara uno, e Valk è dieci punti più indietro al terzo posto. Tutti e tre sono diretti alla MX2 per il 2025, quindi questa è la loro ultima possibilità di rivendicare la gloria del campionato EMX!
Anche il campionato EMX125 presentato da FMF giunge alla sua conclusione questo fine settimana, e questa volta è ancora più serrato dell’MXGP, con soli sei punti di distacco tra il nuovo leader Gyan Doensen, l’olandese del team Racestore KTM Factory Rookies , e l’ungherese Noel Zanocz del Fantic Factory Racing EMX125, che schiera anche l’italiano Simone Mancini, che ha una piccola possibilità matematica di piazzarsi al terzo posto, a 32 punti da Doensen.
Quindi, con quattro campionati decisi nel corso del weekend, l’MXGP di Castilla La Mancha si preannuncia come un evento ricco di festeggiamenti!

Mentre i primi tre classificati del campionato hanno in totale 13 titoli mondiali (quello di quest’anno è il 14°), solo due di questi titoli sono stati realmente assegnati nel round finale di una serie!
Jorge Prado ha tecnicamente conquistato il titolo mondiale MX2 del 2018, il suo primo, nell’ultimo round, ma il suo principale rivale quell’anno, Pauls Jonass, si era già escluso da quella gara per infortunio. L’unica vittoria del titolo nell’ultimo round di Tim Gajser è stata anche la sua prima, nel 2015, contro Jonass, quando è arrivato con un vantaggio di 18 punti sul suo principale inseguitore.
Naturalmente, la grande resa dei conti finale degli ultimi anni è stata il campionato mondiale MXGP del 2021, dove Jeffrey Herlings ha conquistato il titolo nell’ultima gara dell’anno, davanti a Romain Febvre e Gajser ! La situazione di quest’anno è sicuramente nuova per entrambi i contendenti e, con il fattore extra di Prado di fronte al pubblico di casa, sarà interessante vedere chi ne uscirà vincitore!
Nel complesso i principali contendenti hanno avuto un successo variabile in Spagna, poiché Herlings è il più numeroso tra loro con 4 vittorie, due in ogni classe, mentre Prado ne ha tre, due a Xanadu e una a Lugo. Tim Gajser deve guardare indietro al suo primo anno di titolo MXGP nel 2016 per la sua unica vittoria su suolo spagnolo, a Talavera de la Reina. Maxime Renaux, che si gode un forte ritorno dall’infortunio per la Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, ha vinto due volte su suolo spagnolo prima, una in ogni classe a intu-Xanadu Arroyomolinos. Valentin Guillod del Team Ship-to-Cycle Honda Motoblouz SR ha vinto in quest’area prima, vincendo la classe MX2 a Talavera nel 2015!
Cozar vedrà anche la seconda apparizione in MXGP per il Ducati Factory MX Team, con il pilota italiano Alessandro Lupino ai comandi della Desmo450 MX questa volta. Saranno con noi a tempo pieno nel 2025 con Jeremy Seewer, che corre per l’ultima volta con il Kawasaki Racing Team in Cozar e punta a sigillare il quarto posto nella serie davanti al compagno di squadra Febvre!
Anche i tifosi di casa saranno ansiosi di vedere una prestazione di rilievo di Ruben Fernandez, che non ha potuto gareggiare in patria all’inizio dell’anno per il Team HRC , anche se sicuramente la maggior parte del loro sostegno sarà rivolta a Prado, che punta a fare piazza pulita di vittorie spagnole nel 2024 e a vincere il suo secondo titolo mondiale consecutivo!
A differenza della MXGP, la classe MX2 avrà un nuovo campione del mondo nel 2024 e, per la prima volta da quando Alessio Chiodi vinse nella classe 125cc nel 1999, il titolo andrà a un pilota Husqvarna , il 17° titolo per il marchio e il primo sotto l’attuale proprietà austriaca!
Kay de Wolf sta cercando di difendere il suo vantaggio di 36 punti su Lucas Coenen, e la coppia ha vinto entrambi un GP su suolo spagnolo questa stagione. Se Lucas guadagna meno di 11 punti su Kay attraverso la RAM Qualifying Race e la prima gara GP di domenica, allora l’olandese sarà incoronato campione prima dell’ultimo gate drop della campagna. Tuttavia, Lucas Coenen è stato in forma scintillante, ottenendo la vittoria sia in Turchia che in Cina per aumentare le sue possibilità di strappare la gloria al suo compagno di squadra!
Simon Laengenfelder è l’unico altro pilota in campo ad aver vinto in precedenza su suolo spagnolo, avendo vinto il GP MX2 del 2023 a intu-Xanadu Arroyomolinos. È confermato come medaglia di bronzo per la stagione, ma deve ancora vincere un Gran Premio per la Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing questa stagione. Con la pressione spenta, il tedesco ce la metterà tutta per aggiudicarsi un trofeo da primo posto sulla sua superficie dura preferita!
Un altro desideroso di battere il suo record di nessuna vittoria in GP per l’anno sarà il campione del mondo MX2 uscente Andrea Adamo, che è sesto in classifica per la Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, mentre il suo compagno di squadra Liam Everts è confermato al quarto posto nonostante sia stato eliminato dalla serie con il suo incidente a Shanghai. Gli auguriamo tutti una pronta guarigione.
Mikkel Haarup cercherà di coronare una stagione d’esordio di successo per il team Monster Energy Triumph Racing, mantenendo il quinto posto nella serie e sperando almeno di salire sul podio in quello che sarà il suo ultimo Gran Premio MX2.
Thibault Benistant ha vinto la RAM Qualifying Race a Lugo per Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 e ha avuto un ritorno impressionante dall’infortunio dopo l’MXGP della Svizzera. Il suo compagno di squadra Rick Elzinga è confermato al settimo posto per l’anno e cercherà di concludere il 2024 con stile!
I piloti spagnoli Oriol Oliver per WZ Racing KTM, David Braceras per Fantic Factory Racing MX2 e Yago Martinez per TM Moto Racing saranno tutti impazienti di vivere l’atmosfera del pubblico di casa.
La gara sarà sicuramente intensa con il titolo in palio in MX2, e come è stato per tutto l’anno i risultati sono quasi impossibili da prevedere! Non perdertelo!

THE FINAL SHOWDOWN FOR THE TITLE IS ON AT THE MXGP OF CASTILLA LA MANCHA
COZAR (Spain) 26 September 2024 – It’s time for the Champions to be crowned in both classes of the 2024 MXGP Motocross World Championships, as the Spanish venue of Cozar hosts the 20th and final round of the series, the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha!
Named after the landlocked autonomous community that it is set in, the circuit is part of the Circuito Motor Ranch, to be found around 240km south of the capital Madrid and 130km west of the city of Albacete. The venue will be the 19th circuit in Spain to ever host a Motocross Grand Prix, and the second in the Castilla La Mancha region after Talavera de la Reina. This is our third visit to Spain this season, and home hero Jorge Prado has taken victory in both previous rounds for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing in MXGP. Kay de Wolf took the victory in MX2 at intu-Xanadu Arroyomolinos, but his Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing teammate Lucas Coenen won overall at Lugo for the MXGP of Galicia in May.
The MXGP world title will be decided between reigning World Champion Prado and Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, who lost the points lead in China and now sits just seven points behind his rival! Jeffrey Herlings has a slim mathematical chance for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, but a 48-point gap to Prado makes his chance a very remote one.
The year-long tussle for the MX2 World Championship between Dutchman De Wolf and Belgian Lucas Coenen is closer than it’s been since the opening round, with the chasing Coenen closing in with the last two GP wins to trim the gap to 36 points. As in MXGP, it will go down to the very last day of the Championship, which also just happens to be De Wolf’s 20th birthday!
There will be more Champions crowned at Cozar, as the EMX250 European Championship has its final round to decide the three-way battle between series leader Mathis Valin, the Frenchman on the Bud Racing Kawasaki, Italian Valerio Lata for Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors, and Dutch flyer Cas Valk, who is fresh from winning the British MX2 Championship for Gabriel SS24 KTM last weekend! Valin holds a 21-point lead over Lata, so could clinch the title in race one, and Valk is ten points further back in third. All three are MX2-bound for 2025, so this is their last chance for claiming EMX Championship glory!
The EMX125 Championship Presented by FMF also comes to its conclusion this weekend, and this one is even closer than MXGP, with just six points between new leader Gyan Doensen, the Dutchman on the Racestore KTM Factory Rookies team, and Hungarian Noel Zanocz for Fantic Factory Racing EMX125, who also field the Italian Simone Mancini, who has a small mathematical chance in third place, 32 points behind Doensen.
So with four Championships being decided over the weekend, the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha looks set to be an event full of celebration!
While the top three in the Championship have a total of 13 World Championships between them, with this year being the 14th, only two of those titles have truly been decided in the final round of a series!
Jorge Prado technically did clinch the 2018 MX2 world title, his first, in the final round, but his chief rival that year, Pauls Jonass, had already ruled himself out of that race with injury. Tim Gajser’s only final-round title win was also his first, in 2015, against Jonass as well, when he came in with an 18-point advantage over his main chaser.
Of course, the big final round showdown in recent years was the 2021 MXGP World Championships, where Jeffrey Herlings clinched the title in the final race of the year, ahead of Romain Febvre and Gajser! This year’s situation is certainly a new one for both contenders, and with the extra factor of Prado being in front of a home crowd, it will be intriguing to see who will come out on top!
Overall the top contenders have had varied success in Spain, as Herlings has the most among them with 4 victories, two in each class, whereas Prado has three wins, two at Xanadu and one at Lugo. Tim Gajser has to look back to his first MXGP title year in 2016 for his only win on Spanish soil, at Talavera de la Reina. Maxime Renaux, enjoying a strong return from injury for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, has won twice on Spanish soil before, once in each class at intu-Xanadu Arroyomolinos. Valentin Guillod of Team Ship-to-Cycle Honda Motoblouz SR has won in this area before, taking the MX2 class at Talavera in 2015!
Cozar will also see the second appearance in MXGP for the Ducati Factory MX Team, with Italian pilot Alessandro Lupino at the controls of the Desmo450 MX this time. They will be with us full-time in 2025 with Jeremy Seewer, who races for the last time with the Kawasaki Racing Team in Cozar and is looking to seal fourth in the series ahead of teammate Febvre!
Home fans will also be keen to see a strong showing for Ruben Fernandez, who was unable to compete on home soil earlier in the year for Team HRC, although for sure most of their support will be given to Prado, who aims to make it a clean sweep of Spanish victories in 2024 and win his second straight world title in the process!

In contrast to MXGP, the MX2 class will see a new World Champion in 2024, and for the first time since Alessio Chiodi won in the 125cc class in 1999, it will go to a Husqvarna rider, the 17th title for the brand and the first under its current Austrian ownership!
Kay de Wolf is looking to defend his 36-point advantage over Lucas Coenen, and the pair have each won a GP on Spanish soil this season. If Lucas makes less than 11 points on Kay through the RAM Qualifying Race and the first GP race on Sunday, then the Dutchman will be crowned Champion before the final gate drop of the campaign. However, Lucas Coenen has been on scintillating form, taking victory in both Türkiye and China to help his chances of wrestling the glory from his teammate!
Simon Laengenfelder is the only other rider in the field who has also won before on Spanish ground, having won the 2023 MX2 GP at intu-Xanadu Arroyomolinos. He is confirmed as the bronze medallist for the season but has still yet to win a Grand Prix for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing this season. With the pressure off, the German will be going all out to claim a first-place trophy on his favoured hard pack surface!
Another one keen to break his record of no GP wins for the year will be outgoing MX2 World Champion Andrea Adamo, who is sixth in the standings for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, while his teammate Liam Everts is confirmed in fourth despite being knocked out of the series with his crash in Shanghai. We all wish him a speedy recovery.
Mikkel Haarup will be looking to crown a successful debut season for the Monster Energy Triumph Racing team by holding onto fifth in the series and hoping for at least a podium in what will be his last MX2 Grand Prix.
Thibault Benistant won the RAM Qualifying Race at Lugo for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 and has had an impressive return from injury since the MXGP of Switzerland. His teammate Rick Elzinga is confirmed in seventh place for the year and will be looking to end 2024 in style!
Spanish riders Oriol Oliver for WZ Racing KTM, David Braceras for Fantic Factory Racing MX2, and Yago Martinez for TM Moto Racing will all be looking forward to the home crowd atmosphere.
