KAY DE WOLF SI AGGIUDICA IL CAMPIONATO DEL MONDO MX2 MENTRE COENEN È VITTORIOSO AL MXGP DI CASTILLA LA MANCHA |
COZAR (Spagna) 29 settembre 2024 – Il campionato mondiale di motocross FIM MX2 è stato deciso oggi nel sud della Spagna, all’MXGP di Castilla La Mancha, mentre il 20° e ultimo round della stagione ha visto la battaglia durata un anno tra i compagni di squadra del Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing Kay de Wolf e Lucas Coenen giungere alla conclusione con una giornata da ricordare per entrambi i piloti!
Alla fine è stato l’olandese De Wolf a diventare il nuovo campione del mondo MX2, ma la sua giornata non è stata semplice, poiché Coenen ha fatto tutto il possibile per portarsi a casa il titolo con due vittorie decisive, arrivando a soli 20 punti di distacco alla fine di 20 Gran Premi! Tuttavia, grazie a una guida sensata, il detentore della targa rossa ha meritatamente conquistato il titolo nel giorno del suo ventesimo compleanno, dopo una stagione di brillantezza costante e costante.
Il ritmo di Lucas Coenen nella RAM Qualifying Race di domenica era di cattivo auspicio per Kay de Wolf, ma un vantaggio di 34 punti sembrava essere sufficiente se avesse mantenuto i nervi saldi. Tuttavia, mentre il suo compagno di squadra partiva tra i primi tre, il detentore della targa rossa era fuori dai primi dieci dopo la prima curva e sembrava quasi guidare con troppa cautela.
Thibault Benistant ha vinto il suo terzo Fox Holeshot Award della stagione per Monster Energy Yamaha MX2, e ha guidato fino al terzo giro mentre Coenen ha costretto la sua macchina verso una linea interna su una curva a sinistra piena di solchi. Questo ha lasciato il francese a vedersela con Simon Laengenfelder, senza nulla da guadagnare o perdere per la Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, dato che era già pronto per la medaglia di bronzo della serie. Il tedesco non è riuscito a trovare una via d’uscita, e invece è stato messo sotto pressione dal campione del mondo uscente, Andrea Adamo!
L’unico guerriero della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing per la giornata ha dovuto superare il compagno di squadra Monster Energy Yamaha di Benistant, Karlis Reisulis, per il quarto posto e si è tuffato oltre Laengenfelder al nono giro. Con una mossa simile lungo il rettilineo di partenza ha superato anche Benistant due giri dopo. Laengenfelder ha infine superato Thibault al 14° giro per aggiudicarsi il terzo posto in gara.
Nel frattempo, Ferruccio Zanchi ha ottenuto il suo miglior piazzamento dell’anno per il Team HRC, al quinto posto dopo una battaglia con Quentin Prugnieres della F & H Racing, ma l’uomo della Kawasaki ha lasciato cadere la moto e alla fine ha concluso decimo. De Wolf era bloccato verso il limite della top ten, in lotta con il duo Monster Energy Triumph Racing formato da Mikkel Haarup e Camden McLellan!
Tutti e tre hanno superato Reisulis, che ha concluso al nono posto, ma con De Wolf che aveva bisogno del quarto posto per sigillare il campionato anche con la vittoria di Lucas, non è mai stato possibile, dato che Haarup è arrivato sesto e De Wolf ha tenuto a bada McLellan per un soffio, concludendo settimo. Con Lucas che ha vinto con oltre 22 secondi di vantaggio, il distacco era di 23 punti prima della gara finale!
Con un completo cambio di strategia, De Wolf ha attaccato l’inizio della seconda gara, e si è aggiudicato uno shock Fox Holeshot Award, solo il suo terzo della stagione! Di nuovo Benistant e Coenen erano proprio in testa, con Haarup e Reisulis al seguito. Laengenfelder e Adamo sembravano essersi esclusi dai posti sul podio con dei giri iniziali disastrosi.
De Wolf non oppose molta resistenza a Coenen quando il ragazzo belga fece la sua mossa, ma nonostante Benistant sembrasse inizialmente vicino, il festeggiato olandese non era dell’umore giusto per scendere ulteriormente in classifica.
Oriol Oliver era partito bene nel suo Gran Premio di casa per la WZ Racing KTM, ma Zanchi lo ha superato al sesto giro per la sesta posizione. Il giovane italiano avrebbe concluso lì, ma solo dopo che Adamo si era lanciato in un brillante quarto posto. Reisulis è sceso in decima posizione dove avrebbe concluso la classifica generale, dietro Laengenfelder che era sceso al 13° posto in una fase della gara ma si è ripreso al nono posto per il quinto posto generale.
Prugnieres è risalito fino a conquistare la settima posizione e l’ottava in classifica generale, sorpassando Oliver a cinque giri dalla fine, lasciando lo spagnolo nono in classifica generale. Il sorpasso di Adamo su Haarup è avvenuto per gentile concessione di un piccolo errore del danese a soli tre giri dalla fine, portando l’uomo della Triumph al sesto posto in classifica generale davanti a Zanchi. La brillante corsa di Adamo lo ha lasciato secondo in classifica generale, con Benistant terzo, completando un discreto ritorno dall’infortunio con una torta da podio! Il secondo posto di De Wolf lo ha lasciato quarto in classifica generale, quasi 22 secondi dietro a Coenen alla bandiera, ma il premio più importante è stato il campionato mondiale MX2, a quattro anni dall’inizio della sua carriera in MX2 e completando una corsa di sette anni con la squadra ufficiale Husqvarna. È il primo titolo mondiale del marchio dal 1999, e il primo sotto l’attuale proprietà austriaca!
Coenen, con la decima vittoria in carriera in un GP e la nona della stagione, aveva ridotto il distacco a 20 punti alla fine del 20° round, ma è stato l’uomo che oggi ha compiuto 20 anni ad aggiudicarsi il suo primo campionato del mondo, il regalo di compleanno perfetto al termine di un anno incredibile di gare!
Kay de Wolf: ” Mi sono sentito piuttosto bene. Lucas era su un buon ritmo, quindi l’ho lasciato andare. Ho semplicemente controllato la mia gara e ho finalmente ottenuto questa targa d’oro nelle mie mani. Essere in testa per tutta la stagione e ottenere finalmente questa targa d’oro è irreale. Non potrei farcela senza questa squadra. Hanno lavorato così duramente per me. Anche i miei amici, la mia famiglia, tutti i miei sponsor privati, sono stati fantastici. Un grande grazie a loro e ci godremo questa”.
Lucas Coenen: “Certo che la stagione è stata buona, ho ottenuto molte vittorie in gara, ma ho avuto anche problemi all’inizio della stagione con la moto e con me stesso. Quindi, voglio dire, nel complesso, è stata una buona fine di stagione, diciamo. Sappiamo i problemi che abbiamo avuto, quindi, voglio dire, quei problemi sono abbastanza risolti ora, quindi non vedo l’ora del MX delle Nazioni e poi vediamo cosa succederà l’anno prossimo”
Simon Laengenfelder: “Devo dire che è stato un anno duro. KAY DE WOLF CLINCHES THE MX2 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WHILE COENEN IS VICTORIOUS AT THE MXGP OF CASTILLA LA MANCHA
COZAR (Spain) 29 September 2024 – The FIM MX2 World Motocross Championship was decided in southern Spain today at the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha as the 20th and final round of the season saw the year-long battle between Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing teammates Kay de Wolf and Lucas Coenen reach its conclusion with a day to remember for both riders!
Ultimately it was Dutch flyer De Wolf who became the new MX2 World Champion, but his day was not straightforward as Coenen did everything possible to take the title away with two commanding race wins, getting to within just 20 points at the end of 20 Grands Prix! However, with sensible riding, the red plate holder deservedly claimed the title on his 20th birthday, after a season of sustained and consistent brilliance.
Lucas Coenen’s pace in the RAM Qualifying Race on Sunday was ominous for Kay de Wolf, but a 34-point cushion looked to be enough if he held his nerve. However, as his teammate started in the top three, the red plate holder was outside the top ten after the first corner and almost seemed to be riding too cautiously.
Thibault Benistant took his third Fox Holeshot Award of the season for Monster Energy Yamaha MX2, and led until lap three as Coenen forced his machine towards an inside line on a rutted left-hander. This left the Frenchman to deal with Simon Laengenfelder, with nothing to gain or lose for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing as he was already set for the series bronze medal. The German could not find a way through, and instead came under pressure from the outgoing World Champion, Andrea Adamo!
The lone Red Bull KTM Factory Racing warrior for the day had to pass Benistant’s Monster Energy Yamaha teammate Karlis Reisulis for fourth and dived past Laengenfelder on lap nine. With a similar move along the start straight he also got past Benistant two laps later. Laengenfelder eventually passed Thibault on lap 14 to claim third in the race.
Meanwhile, Ferruccio Zanchi took his best finish of the year for Team HRC in fifth after a battle with F & H Racing’s Quentin Prugnieres, but the Kawasaki man dropped the bike to eventually finish tenth. De Wolf was locked towards the edge of the top ten, fighting with the Monster Energy Triumph Racing duo Mikkel Haarup and Camden McLellan!
All three got past Reisulis, who finished in ninth, but with De Wolf needing fourth to seal the Championship even with Lucas winning, it was never on the cards as Haarup took sixth, and De Wolf only just held off McLellan to finish seventh. With Lucas winning by over 22 seconds, the gap was 23 points going into the final race!
With a complete change of strategy, De Wolf attacked the start of race two, and came out with a shock Fox Holeshot Award, only his third of the season! Again Benistant and Coenen were right at the front, with Haarup and Reisulis in tow. Laengenfelder and Adamo looked to have ruled themselves out of the podium places with dire opening laps.
De Wolf gave Coenen little resistance when the Belgian teenager made his move, but although Benistant looked close initially, the Dutch birthday boy was not in a mood to drop any further down the order.
Oriol Oliver had started well in his home Grand Prix for WZ Racing KTM, but Zanchi passed him on lap six for sixth position. The young Italian would finish there, but only after Adamo charged through to a brilliant fourth. Reisulis dropped back to tenth position where he would finish overall, behind Laengenfelder who had fell down to 13th at one stage in the race but recovered to ninth for fifth overall.
Prugnieres rose through the order to claim seventh position and eighth overall, passing Oliver with five laps to go, leaving the Spaniard ninth overall. Adamo’s pass on Haarup came courtesy of a small mistake for the Dane with just three laps remaining, putting the Triumph man in sixth overall ahead of Zanchi. Adamo’s brilliant ride left him second overall, with Benistant third, completing a decent return from injury with some podium pie! De Wolf’s second left him fourth overall, nearly 22 seconds down on Coenen at the flag, but the more important prize was the MX2 World Championship, four years into his MX2 career and completing a seven-year run with the factory Husqvarna squad. It is the brand’s first world title since 1999, and its first under its current Austrian ownership!
Coenen, with his tenth career GP win and ninth of the season, had closed the gap to 20 points at the end of the 20th round, but it was the man who turned 20 today that took his first World Championship, the perfect birthday present at the end of an incredible year of racing!
Kay de Wolf: “It felt pretty good. Lucas was on a good pace, so I let him go. I just controlled my own race and got this gold plate finally in my hands. Leading the whole season and finally getting this gold plate is unreal. I can’t do it without this team. They’ve been working so hard for me. Also my friends, family, all my private sponsors, they’ve been amazing. Big thanks to them and we’re going to enjoy this one.”
Lucas Coenen: “Of course the season was good, I got a lot of race wins, also got problems in the beginning of the season with the bike and with me. So, I mean, overall, it’s been a good end of the season, let’s say. We know the problems we had, so I mean, those problems are quite sorted out now so I’m looking forward to the MX of Nations and then let’s see what going to come next year”
Simon Laengenfelder: “I need to say it was a tough year. I started quite okay, but I never made it to the top seven of the podium, which is a bit of a shame, but yeah, another bronze medal I think, three bronze medals are not too bad, with another with a broken collarbone and coming back directly the weekend after i would say with another with a broken collarbone and coming back directly the weekend after i would say it was not it was not the best but was also quite good.
