COZAR (Spagna) 29 settembre 2024 – Il campionato mondiale di motocross FIM si è concluso oggi in modo rovente nel sud della Spagna, all’MXGP di Castilla La Mancha, dove il 20° e ultimo round della stagione ha visto il campione del mondo in carica Jorge Prado conservare la corona con la vittoria assoluta per la Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing , ma è stato spinto fino all’ultima gara con un margine di vittoria finale di soli dieci punti!

Dal suo Con una forma dominante nella RAM Qualifying Race di sabato, il detentore della tabella rossa ha chiarito che non aveva intenzione di perdere il titolo in casa e, con due holeshot netti e un ritmo iniziale scintillante, ha respinto la sfida di Tim Gajser del Team HRC per aggiudicarsi il suo quarto campionato del mondo, per la gioia dei suoi tifosi di casa, nonostante un po’ di spavento lungo il percorso!

I rivali del campione in carica avevano ormai le idee chiare dopo la netta vittoria nella RAM Qualifying Race di sabato, anche se Jeffrey Herlings ha nuovamente dimostrato il suo passo con il tempo più veloce nella sessione di riscaldamento mattutina per la Red Bull KTM Factory Racing .

La velocità di Prado alla prima curva della prima gara è stata ancora una volta mozzafiato: ha tagliato il traguardo Fox Holeshot all’uscita con circa cinque lunghezze di moto di vantaggio sul pilota successivo, Jeremy Seewer, nel suo ultimo GP per il Kawasaki Racing Team.

Tuttavia, i tifosi locali avevano motivo di preoccuparsi, poiché Gajser ha immediatamente superato Seewer e il pilota della Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Andrea Bonacorsi , in rapida partenza, per portarsi al secondo posto, e lo sloveno ha iniziato a tormentare la ruota posteriore dell’eroe spagnolo.

Uscendo dalla seconda curva, Herlings era uscito largo dalla pista e si è ritenuto che avesse guadagnato un vantaggio quando è rientrato, con conseguente penalità di tre posizioni. Indipendentemente da ciò, è passato alla terza posizione in pista alla chiusura, relegato alla sesta posizione dalla penalità.

Uno dei piloti che ha superato è stato il pilota della Standing Construct Honda Alberto Forato, che ha lottato per tutta la gara, superando Seewer con una mossa decisa alla fine del rettilineo di partenza al 14° giro. Purtroppo per l’italiano, si è ribaltato in una curva al giro successivo, consentendo a Seewer e al suo compagno di scuderia del Kawasaki Racing Team Romain Febvre di arrivare in terza e quarta posizione. Forato si è ripreso ed è stato classificato al quinto posto.

Dietro i primi sei c’erano Bonacorsi, il pilota del Team Ship To Cycle Honda Motoblouz SR Valentin Guillod, poi Maxime Renaux al nono posto per Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP dopo un brutto incidente nei primi giri. Jan Pancar ha completato la top ten sulla sua TEM JP253 KTM.

In testa, Prado ha fatto ciò che sa fare meglio e, nonostante gli sforzi di Gajser, lo spagnolo è riuscito ad allungare fino a guadagnare un vantaggio di sette secondi, prima di rallentare negli ultimi giri e assicurarsi la sua 17esima vittoria domenicale della stagione, portandosi con 12 punti di vantaggio nell’ultima gara dell’anno!

Quella gara finale è iniziata nel solito modo per il campione, con un altro Fox Holeshot Award clinico, il suo 18° per la stagione! Questa volta è stato Gajser a uscire dal circuito, uscendo dalla curva uno e rientrando tra alcuni cartelloni pubblicitari. È stato giudicato che non aveva ottenuto un vantaggio e gli è stato permesso di continuare a correre senza penalità.

Seewer era di nuovo proprio in prima linea, ma Herlings lo ha superato a tutta velocità alla terza curva e sembrava che stesse correndo con l’intenzione di vincere la gara. Anche Febvre e Gajser hanno superato Seewer prima dell’inizio del primo giro completo.

Dietro i primi cinque, il circuito asciutto era al suo massimo, e la maggior parte dei primi dieci ha mantenuto le proprie posizioni fino alla fine, tra cui Guillod in un solido sesto, Glenn Coldenhoff della Fantic Factory Racing, il pilota di casa Ruben Fernandez all’ottavo posto per il Team HRC, con Renaux e Pancar che hanno nuovamente concluso nono e decimo dopo che Bonacorsi è caduto in fondo all’ordine. Guillod si sarebbe piazzato sesto assoluto davanti a Forato, Coldenhoff, Renaux e Pancar.

Il grande momento si è verificato al settimo giro, quando la ruota posteriore di Prado è improvvisamente uscita in discesa ed è stato costretto a uscire dal circuito! Sotto la pressione di Herlings in quel momento, “The Bullet” è subito andato in testa e i fan sembravano preoccupati mentre Prado sembrava procedere a velocità sostenuta per alcune curve, consentendo a Febvre e Gajser di arrivare al secondo e terzo posto. Fortunatamente per il numero 1, non c’è stato alcun problema con la sua moto e se l’è presa comoda fino alla bandiera. Gajser ha fatto tutto il possibile ma non è riuscito ad avvicinarsi alla coppia di testa e Febvre si è ribaltato in una curva mentre cercava di mettere pressione a Herlings, ma ha mantenuto la seconda posizione.

Questo ha lasciato i primi tre della serie, Prado, Gajser e Herlings a finire in quest’ordine generale, con Febvre e Seewer quarto e quinto nel GP. Prado ha avuto la folla completamente dietro di lui fino alla bandiera a scacchi e i festeggiamenti sono continuati fino a notte fonda! La sua 49a vittoria in carriera in GP lo ha messo alla pari con Gajser e diventa il primo campione del mondo MXGP consecutivo dalla difesa del titolo di successo dello sloveno nel 2020. È stata una bella giornata per essere un fan del motocross spagnolo a Cozar!

Jorge Prado: “È semplicemente incredibile, all’inizio della stagione non avrei mai immaginato di essere seduto in questa posizione in questo momento e mi stavo semplicemente divertendo così tanto che la seconda gara è stata così lunga che non è finita e sai che dietro c’è tanto lavoro e tutti i fan sono venuti, mi hanno sostenuto ogni singolo giro di ogni gara ed è incredibile vedere questo. Incredibile sentire quell’atmosfera laggiù quando ero alla festa e sono incredibilmente grato di aver vinto il titolo mondiale qui in Spagna con i miei fan, la mia famiglia, i miei amici e tutti. Grazie a tutti, è stato di nuovo un anno fantastico!”. “Non so quasi cosa dire: ho vinto il titolo proprio nella mia Spagna ed è semplicemente incredibile! È stato un anno fantastico e penso che io e la squadra meritiamo davvero questo titolo dopo tutto il lavoro che abbiamo svolto. All’inizio della stagione non avrei mai immaginato di trovarmi in questa posizione, ma oggi è andato tutto bene. La seconda manche è sembrata lunghissima, ma tagliare il traguardo è stato un sogno. Per ottenere risultati come questi c’è tanto lavoro che si fa dentro la squadra… qualcosa che non si vede ma è fondamentale. Porto a casa il mio quarto titolo mondiale qui di fronte a familiari, amici e fan. Grazie a tutti per l’incredibile supporto: è stato un anno fantastico!”

Tim Gajser: “Intendo dire che abbiamo avuto una grande stagione, sai, una bella battaglia con Jorge e con Jeffrey. Quindi, congratulazioni a Jorge per aver vinto il titolo. Quest’anno ero davvero vicino, stavo dando il massimo e penso che abbiamo avuto un campionato davvero buono. Quindi, voglio dire un enorme grazie a tutto il mio team, la moto è stata fantastica per tutto l’anno e a tutti quelli intorno a me. Quindi, un enorme grazie. Grazie mille ragazzi.”

Jeffrey Herlings: ” Quindi prima di tutto nel weekend, sì, sai, sono abbastanza contento di finire terzo nel campionato. Arrivare oggi con un podio va bene, ovviamente ho avuto un po’ di sfortuna con alcune decisioni. Ma Jorge è stato il migliore per tutto l’anno. Le partenze sono una cosa, era il re in questo e inoltre è un campione, quindi grandi congratulazioni a lui. Ma penso che oggi il risultato sia e inoltre è un campione, quindi grandi congratulazioni a lui. Non vedo l’ora che arrivi l’anno prossimo”.

COZAR (Spain) 29 September 2024 – The FIM Motocross World Motocross Championship came to a scorching conclusion in southern Spain today at the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha as the 20th and final round of the season saw reigning World Champion Jorge Prado retain his crown with overall victory for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, but he was pushed all the way to the very last race with a final winning margin of just ten points!

From his dominant form in Saturday’s RAM Qualifying Race, the red plate holder made it clear that he had no intention of losing the title on home ground, and with two clear holeshots and scintillating early pace, he fought off the challenge of Team HRC’s Tim Gajser to clinch his fourth World Championship, to the delight of his home fans, although there was a scare for him on the way!

The writing was on the wall for the reigning Champion’s rivals after his clear win in the RAM Qualifying Race on Saturday, although Jeffrey Herlings again showed his pace with the fastest time in the morning Warm-Up session for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

The sheer speed of Prado into the first corner of race one was once more nothing short of breath-taking, and he crossed the Fox Holeshot line on the exit with around five bike lengths on the next rider, Jeremy Seewer, in his last GP for the Kawasaki Racing Team.

Local fans had cause for concern, however, as Gajser immediately snapped past both Seewer and the fast-starting Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP rider Andrea Bonacorsi to get himself up into second place, and the Slovenian started hounding the rear wheel of the Spanish hero.

Coming out of the second corner, Herlings had run wide off the track, and was judged to have gained an advantage as he rejoined, resulting in a three-position penalty. Regardless, he charged through to third position on track by the close, relegated to sixth position by the penalty.

One of the riders he passed was Standing Construct Honda rider Alberto Forato, who fought forward throughout the race, passing Seewer with a strong move at the end of the start straight on lap 14. Sadly for the Italian, he tipped over in a corner on the following lap, allowing Seewer and his Kawasaki Racing Team stablemate Romain Febvre into what was ultimately third and fourth. Forato recovered to be classified in fifth.

Behind the top six were Bonacorsi, Team Ship To Cycle Honda Motoblouz SR rider Valentin Guillod, then Maxime Renaux in ninth for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP after a nasty crash in the early laps.  Jan Pancar rounded out the top ten on his TEM JP253 KTM.

At the front, Prado did what he does best, and despite Gajser’s best efforts the Spaniard edged away to build a seven-second lead before easing off in the closing laps to secure his 17th Sunday race win of the campaign and take a 12-point lead into the final race of the year!

That final race began in usual fashion for the Champ, with another clinical Fox Holeshot Award, his 18th for the season!  This time it was Gajser who ran off the circuit, exiting turn one and rejoining between some advertising boards.  He was judged not to have gained an advantage and was allowed to race on without penalty.

Seewer was again right at the sharp end, but Herlings blasted past him into the third corner and looked to be racing with intentions on a race win. Febvre and Gajser also advanced past Seewer before the start of the first full lap.

Behind the top five, the drying circuit was at its toughest, and most of the top ten held their positions until the end, including Guillod in a solid sixth, Fantic Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff, home rider Ruben Fernandez in eighth for Team HRC, with Renaux and Pancar again finishing ninth and tenth after Bonacorsi suffered a fall down the order.  Guillod would take sixth overall ahead of Forato, Coldenhoff, Renaux, and Pancar.

The big moment occurred on lap seven, as Prado’s rear wheel suddenly stepped out on a downhill and he was forced to run off the circuit!  Under pressure from Herlings at the time, “The Bullet” immediately led, and the fans looked worried as Prado seemed to cruise for a few corners, allowing Febvre and Gajser into second and third.  Fortunately for the #1, there was no issue with his machine, and he took it easy to the flag.  Gajser did all he could but couldn’t close on the leading pair, and Febvre tipped over in a corner as he tried to pressure Herlings, but kept hold of second place.

This left the top three in the series, Prado, Gajser, and Herlings to finish in that order overall, with Febvre and Seewer fourth and fifth in the GP.  Prado had the crowd fully behind him all the way to the chequered flag, and the celebrations are continuing long into the night! His 49th career GP win levels him with Gajser, and he becomes the first back-to-back MXGP World Champion since the Slovenian’s successful title defence of 2020.  It was a good day to be a Spanish Motocross fan in Cozar!

Jorge Prado: “This is just unbelievable like at the beginning of the season I wouldn’t imagine to be sitting in this position right now and I was just enjoying it so much that second race was so long it just didn’t end and you know so much work goes behind this and all the fans came over they were supporting every single lap of every race and this is amazing to see this. Amazing to feel in that atmosphere over there when I was in the party and just unbelievably grateful to get the world title over here in Spain with my fans with my family my friends with everyone. Just thank you everyone, it’s been an awesome year again!.”

Tim Gajser: “I mean we had a great season, you know, nice battle with Jorge and with Jeffrey. So, congrats to Jorge for winning the title. I was really close this year, I was giving my best and I think we had a really good championship. So, I want to say a huge thank you to all my team, the bike was amazing for the all year and everybody around me. So, a huge thank you. Thank you very much guys.”

Jeffrey Herlings: “So first of all over the weekend, yeah, you know to finish 3rd in the championship I’m quite happy with. Coming out today with a podium it’s okay obviously had quite some bad luck with some decisions. But Jorge, he was the best for the whole year. Starts is one thing he was the king of that and furthermore he he’s a champion so big congrats to him. But I think today the result is and furthermore he was he’s a champion so big congrats to that. I’m looking forward to next year.”
