Bonacorsi impressiona al 16° round dell’MXGP con il settimo posto assoluto

Andrea Bonacorsi della Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP si è piazzato settimo nella classifica generale all’MXGP dei Paesi Bassi ad Arnhem. Nonostante una caduta costosa in Gara 1, l’italiano è arrivato settimo, seguito dal nono posto in Gara 2. Al suo atteso ritorno in MXGP, Jago Geerts ha mancato di poco un piazzamento nella top 10 con l’11° posto generale in quello che sarà uno degli eventi più difficili del calendario. Per Calvin Vlaanderen, una caduta alla prima curva in Gara 1 lo ha limitato a un 14° posto finale, mentre soffriva di un forte dolore al ginocchio sinistro. Vlaanderen ha quindi preso la difficile decisione di non schierarsi per Gara 2.

Rispetto alla superficie dura e accidentata di Uddevalla, in Svezia, dello scorso weekend, oggi Arnhem, nei Paesi Bassi, è stata completamente diversa, con la sua sabbia profonda, le grandi buche e le linee in continuo cambiamento che hanno messo a dura prova l’uomo e la macchina.

Bonacorsi era impaziente di gareggiare ad Arnhem, poiché l’italiano è molto abile sulla sabbia e nelle ultime settimane aveva sviluppato alcune nuove impostazioni per la sua Yamaha YZ450FM con il team. Fuori dai primi 10 in Gara 1, il ventunenne si è rapidamente liberato da una battaglia a metà gruppo per passare al settimo posto prima di cadere e scendere all’ottavo. Con solo pochi giri rimanenti, Bona si è riorganizzato, ha superato di nuovo Kevin Horgmo ed è arrivato dolorosamente vicino a superare Jeremy Seewer per il sesto posto, ma è arrivato di poco corto al traguardo.

Nonostante l’aumento di fiducia dovuto alla sua prestazione nella gara di apertura, Bonacorsi ha impiegato un po’ più di tempo per trovare il ritmo nella seconda gara, ma quando ci è riuscito, ha superato un rivale a ogni giro per cinque giri, passando dal 14° al 9° posto a metà gara. Tuttavia, l’ottavo posto era appena fuori portata alla fine e con il suo nono posto, si è assicurato il settimo posto assoluto, mantenendo il 12° posto nella classifica di campionato.

Al suo debutto in MXGP dopo mesi di recupero e riabilitazione in seguito all’incidente all’apertura della stagione a marzo, Geerts ha sicuramente impressionato in quello che sarà uno dei Gran Premi più impegnativi dell’anno dal punto di vista fisico. Un impressionante nono posto nella gara di apertura è stato seguito da un 13° posto in Gara 2 per l’11° posto assoluto e, poiché il belga trascorre più tempo a bordo della sua Yamaha YZ450FM, la sua velocità e resistenza continueranno solo a migliorare.

Vlaanderen è stato frustrantemente escluso dall’MXGP dei Paesi Bassi dopo Gara Uno. Dopo una caduta al primo turno della gara di apertura, Vlaanderen ha avvertito dolore al ginocchio sinistro, ma ha dimostrato la sua straordinaria determinazione completando la gara al 14° posto. Tuttavia, non è stato in grado di schierarsi per Gara Due a causa del forte dolore e del disagio.

Dopo un altro fine settimana altalenante per la squadra, il prossimo evento nel calendario del campionato mondiale MXGP è l’MXGP della Svizzera il prossimo fine settimana, dal 24 al 25 agosto.

“Mi sento davvero bene per oggi. Non ho avuto le migliori partenze, ma ho lavorato abbastanza bene in entrambe le gare. Nella prima gara ero settimo e cercavo di passare per il sesto e poi sono caduto a due giri dalla fine. Ma sono tornato sesto al traguardo, anche se ho esaurito il tempo per fare un sorpasso. Nella seconda ci ho messo un po’ troppo a trovare il mio ritmo e sono finito nono per il settimo posto assoluto. I cambiamenti che abbiamo fatto con il team hanno funzionato molto bene, quindi sono contento dei progressi e non vedo l’ora di continuare la stagione”.

“Sono contento del mio weekend. Ho avuto buone partenze in entrambe le gare e sono arrivato tra i primi 10 nella prima, al nono posto. Poi sono arrivato 13° in Gara 2, quindi per il mio primo GP da molto tempo posso essere contento. La mia velocità è buona per i primi 10-15 minuti, ma è difficile mantenerla dopo così tanto tempo di pausa. Ma con il tempo e altre gare ci arriveremo e sono davvero contento di essere tornato alle gare con la squadra”.

Bonacorsi Impresses at MXGP Round 16 With Seventh Overall

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Andrea Bonacorsi has placed seventh overall at the MXGP of The Netherlands in Arnhem. Despite a costly fall in Race One, the Italian finished seventh, then followed that up with ninth in Race Two. Making his long-awaited return to MXGP, Jago Geerts just missed out on a top-10 finish with 11th overall at what will be one of the toughest events on the calendar. For Calvin Vlaanderen, a first-turn crash in Race One limited him to a 14th place finish while suffering from severe pain in his left knee. Vlaanderen then made the difficult decision not to line up for Race Two.

From the hardpack and rugged, edgy race surface in Uddevalla, Sweden last weekend, Arnhem in The Netherlands today was completely different, with its deep sand, big holes, and ever-changing lines serving up another serious test of man and machine.

Bonacorsi was eager to compete in Arnhem as the Italian is very capable in sand and in recent weeks, he’d developed some new settings for his Yamaha YZ450FM machine with the team. From outside the top 10 in Race One, the 21-year-old quickly broke free from a mid-pack battle to move into seventh before falling and dropping to eighth. With just a few laps remaining, Bona regrouped, repassed Kevin Horgmo, and came agonisingly close to passing Jeremy Seewer for sixth but came up just short at the finish.

Despite the confidence boost from his performance in the opening race, Bonacorsi took a little longer to get into his rhythm in Race Two but when he did, he passed a rival every lap for five laps to move from 14th to ninth by mid-race. However, eighth was just out of reach at the end and with his ninth-place finish, he secured seventh overall to maintain 12th in the Championship Standings.

Making his MXGP debut after months of recovery and rehabilitation following his crash at the season opener in March, Geerts certainly impressed at what will be one of the more physically demanding Grands Prix of the year. An impressive ninth in the opening race was followed up by a 13th in Race Two for 11th overall and as the Belgian spends more time aboard his Yamaha YZ450FM, his speed and endurance will only continue to improve.

Vlaanderen was frustratingly ruled out of the MXGP of The Netherlands after Race One. Following a first-turn fall in the opening race, Vlaanderen experienced pain in his left knee but showcased his remarkable determination by completing the race in 14th. However, he was unable to line up for Race Two due to the severe pain and discomfort.

Further updates regarding the extent of Vlaanderen’s injury and his potential return to action will be shared on Yamaha-Racing.com in due course. As it stands, the 28-year-old remains fourth in the Championship Standings.

After another mixed weekend for the team, the next event on the MXGP World Championship calendar is the MXGP of Switzerland next weekend on August 24-25.

“I feel really good about today. I didn’t have the best starts, but I worked my way through pretty well in both races. In the first race I was running seventh and trying to pass for sixth and then I crashed with two laps to go. But I caught back up to sixth at the finish although I ran out of time to make a pass. In the second one I took a little too long to find my flow and ended up ninth for seventh overall. The changes we’ve made with the team worked really well so I’m happy with the progress and looking forward to the rest of the season.”

“I’m happy about my weekend. I had good starts in both races and finished inside the top 10 in the first one in ninth. Then I was 13th in Race Two, so for my first GP in a long time I can be happy. My speed is good for the first 10 to 15 minutes, but it’s difficult to maintain it after so much time off. But with time and more races we’ll get there and I’m really happy to be back at the races with the team.”
