ARNHEM (Paesi Bassi) 14 agosto 2024 – Tramite traghetti o voli dall’MXGP di Svezia dello scorso fine settimana, le stelle del Campionato mondiale di motocross FIM tornano dalla Scandinavia all’Europa nord-occidentale, mentre l’ MXGP dei Paesi Bassi presenta un’altra dura sfida per il round 16 sul circuito Motorsportpark Gelderland Midden alla periferia della città di Arnhem .
Il circuito olandese era una novità nel calendario del 2023 e ha visto le vittorie complessive di Romain Febvre in MXGP e Liam Everts in MX2, sebbene sia uno dei 31 circuiti separati del paese ad aver ospitato il Grand Prix Motocross sin dall’inizio del campionato nel 1957, quando si tenne al circuito di Lichtenvoorde a circa 35 km a est di Arnhem. Il vincitore quel giorno fu il primo campione del mondo in assoluto, Bill Nilsson dalla Svezia.
Tra i piloti di questo fine settimana, Jeffrey Herlings della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing ha vinto di più nei Paesi Bassi con 14 Gran Premi sul suo terreno sabbioso di casa, anche se non è stato in grado di lottare per uno dal 2020. I tifosi di casa hanno una schiera di piloti olandesi per cui fare il tifo in tutte le classi, con sfidanti del campionato in ogni gara, quindi genereranno un’atmosfera chiassosa come abbiamo visto l’anno scorso!
Uno dei piloti di maggior successo negli eventi olandesi tornerà in azione questo fine settimana, quando Antonio Cairoli uscirà dal ritiro per debuttare con la nuova moto Ducati Desmo450 MX per il Ducati Factory MX Team! La sua presenza significa che abbiamo i vincitori degli ultimi quindici titoli mondiali MXGP sulla linea di partenza ad Arnhem!
Mentre la stagione entra nel suo ultimo quarto, Tim Gajser continua a detenere la tabella rossa per il Team HRC , puntando alla sua terza vittoria in un GP sulla sabbia olandese, con Jorge Prado staccato di soli 17 punti per la Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing , mentre Herlings è staccato di 48 punti dallo sloveno.
Kay de Wolf porterà la tabella rossa per Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing nel suo Gran Premio di casa, ma il compagno di squadra Lucas Coenen ha ridotto il suo vantaggio a 49 punti con la vittoria a Uddevalla. Simon Laengenfelder è terzo per Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing e la sua vittoria in gara a Lommel a luglio rafforzerà la sua fiducia per le condizioni olandesi!
I tifosi locali saranno in pista domenica mattina presto per il sesto e penultimo round del campionato mondiale di motocross femminile WMX, attualmente guidato dall’autoproclamata “Regina della sabbia” Lotte van Drunen, che detiene un risicato vantaggio di tre punti per la De Baets Yamaha sulla rivale spagnola Daniela Guillen, che cercherà di rovinare la festa con la sua GASGAS del RFME Spain National Team ! Anche la più recente vincitrice del WMX, Lynn Valk , sarà entusiasta di esibirsi di fronte ai suoi tifosi di casa per la Schmicker Racing KTM .
La serie EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing European Championship tiene il suo nono round ad Arnhem e la stella della Fantic Factory Racing EMX125 Noel Zanocz guida la classifica con 18 punti di vantaggio sull’eroe di casa Gyan Doensen, che godrà di un enorme supporto per Racestore KTM Factory Rookies. Un’altra stella nascente olandese, Dani Heitink, ha vinto una gara in Svezia e sarà entusiasta di ottenere un buon risultato di fronte al suo pubblico locale!

L’MXGP di Svezia dello scorso fine settimana ha visto i primi due piloti della serie avvicinarsi nella corsa per il campionato mondiale MXGP, con Prado che ha ottenuto una doppia vittoria per contrastare la vittoria di Gajser nella RAM Qualifying Race. Mentre lo spagnolo non ha ancora vinto un round MXGP assoluto nei Paesi Bassi, ne ha vinti tre nella categoria MX2 dal 2017 al 2019. Gajser nel frattempo ha vinto due volte sulla sabbia olandese, nella sua prima stagione da titolo del 2015 in MX2 e nel 2021 al circuito di Oss. Lo sloveno ha corso per due quinti l’anno scorso ad Arnhem, mentre Prado è andato 1-4 per il 2° posto assoluto.
Sebbene i risultati di Uddevalla abbiano lasciato Herlings con una montagna più grande da scalare di prima, non potrebbe esserci posto migliore del suo paese d’origine per il detentore del record di vittorie di tutti i tempi in GP per reagire ai suoi rivali e riprendere lo slancio che aveva prima della Svezia. Impossibilitato a competere l’anno scorso ad Arnhem dopo che un incidente di sabato gli ha fratturato la clavicola, cercherà la vittoria numero 15 nel suo paese natale, la prima dal 2020!
Oltre ai tre grandi, il vincitore dell’anno scorso per il Kawasaki Racing Team è stato Romain Febvre, che ha ottenuto la sua seconda vittoria in terra olandese, mentre c’è solo un altro pilota in gara nella categoria ad aver ottenuto un trofeo per il primo posto nei Paesi Bassi.
Quel pilota è uno dei più intriganti wildcard mai visti nella categoria, dato che il nove volte campione del mondo Antonio Cairoli fa un ritorno come parte del suo ruolo di sviluppo per il potente marchio Ducati, e l’attesissima apparizione di debutto del produttore italiano non avrebbe potuto essere fatta con un ambasciatore più stimato per il motocross italiano. Vincitore di dieci Gran Premi in terra olandese, la sua apparizione significa che abbiamo quattro dei sette piloti di maggior successo nella storia del Gran Premio sulla griglia di partenza ad Arnhem!
Altri piloti che sventolano la bandiera olandese includono Calvin Vlaanderen della Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, attualmente quarto nella serie, e il duo della Fantic Factory Racing Glenn Coldenhoff e Brian Bogers, che si trovano rispettivamente al settimo e all’undicesimo posto in classifica. Bogers tornerà dopo un incidente spaventoso in Svezia che lo ha messo fuori gioco dopo sei giri di azione domenica, e vorrà che la folla faccia un po’ di rumore mentre fa l’Official GoPro Lap prima del suo GP di casa! Si schiereranno altre sette wild card dalla nazione ospitante, così come il quattro volte campione britannico Conrad Mewse, che torna per la Crendon Tru7 Honda dopo aver mostrato una buona velocità all’MXGP delle Fiandre.
Sarà sicuramente un’altra battaglia reale tra i Kingpins della MXGP ad Arnhem!
Ancora una volta il pendolo dello slancio in questa spettacolare stagione di gare MX2 ha oscillato in una direzione diversa in Svezia, quando Lucas Coenen ha ottenuto una sorprendente doppia vittoria a Uddevalla e ha guadagnato terreno sul suo compagno di squadra con la tabella rossa Kay de Wolf, che ha lavorato duramente per il quinto posto assoluto. Il divario tra i due è ora appena sotto il punteggio massimo di domenica, a 49 punti.
Entrambi gli uomini sono maestri della sabbia, anche se De Wolf ha vinto sia in Sardegna che nelle Fiandre questa stagione. Kay ha saltato la gara ad Arnhem l’anno scorso per infortunio, mentre Lucas è scivolato all’inizio della prima gara, negandogli un weekend perfetto mentre recuperava fino al 6° posto, la sua vittoria nella seconda gara lo ha lasciato a soli due punti dal punteggio di vittoria generale di Liam Everts ‘ 3-2.
Il belga arriva ad Arnhem da solo quarto nel campionato per la Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, ma sembra crescere in velocità dopo una stagione iniziata con un infortunio al pollice. Terzo nella serie è Simon Laengenfelder, vincitore della gara di apertura ad Arnhem la scorsa stagione, che è su una serie di tre podi GP nel suo tentativo di raggiungere Lucas Coenen per la medaglia d’argento. Il tedesco deve ancora vincere un Gran Premio questa stagione e si trova a 23 punti dal belga e 72 dietro De Wolf.
Monster Energy Triumph Racing è vicina a concludere il suo primo anno in MX2 con un pilota tra i primi cinque della serie, con Mikkel Haarup con soli tredici punti di vantaggio sul campione in carica Andrea Adamo, che ha conquistato un coraggioso secondo posto nella classifica generale a Uddevalla.
Rick Elzinga, dopo un bel secondo posto assoluto per Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 sulla sabbia di Lommel, deve strofinarsi le mani in vista del suo GP di casa, visto che è settimo nella classifica del campionato. Anche i connazionali olandesi Jens Walvoort per KTM SB Racing e Kay Karssemakers per Fantic Factory Racing sono tra i primi 20 della serie e sono molto interessati a ottenere risultati importanti. A loro si uniscono due piloti di punta della EMX250 che partecipano come wild card questo fine settimana, Cas Valk del team Gabriel SS24 KTM e Ivano van Erp per VRT Yamaha. Cas ha vinto la prima gara della EMX250 in Svezia, mentre Van Erp ha ottenuto il verdetto generale con 2-2.
Anche Scott Smulders del KMP Honda Racing Team Powered by Krettek e Bradley Mesters del KTM Kosak Team saranno al via della gara nel loro paese d’origine.
Quest’anno le gare sulla sabbia della MX2 sono state uno spettacolo assoluto per gli occhi e questo fine settimana non dovrebbe essere diverso, quindi tenete gli occhi aperti per le emozioni forti all’MXGP dei Paesi Bassi!

HISTORY TO BE BUILT ON THE SAND OF ARNHEM AT THE MXGP OF THE NETHERLANDS
ARNHEM (The Netherlands) 14 August 2024 – Through ferries or flights from last weekend’s MXGP of Sweden, the FIM Motocross World Championship stars head back from Scandinavia to north-western Europe, as the MXGP of The Netherlands presents another tough challenge for round 16 at the Motorsportpark Gelderland Midden circuit on the outskirts of the city of Arnhem.
The Dutch circuit was new to the calendar in 2023 and saw overall victories for Romain Febvre in MXGP and Liam Everts in MX2, although it is one of 31 separate circuits in the country to have hosted Grand Prix Motocross since the very start of the Championship in 1957, when it was held at the Lichtenvoorde circuit about 35 km east of Arnhem itself. The winner that day was the first ever World Champion, Bill Nilsson from Sweden.
From this weekend’s riders, Jeffrey Herlings of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing has won the most in The Netherlands with 14 Grands Prix on his home sandy soil, although he has been unable to challenge for one since 2020. The home fans have a host of Dutch riders to cheer for in all classes, with Championship challengers in every race, so they will generate a boisterous atmosphere as we saw last year!
One of the most successful racers in Dutch events will make his return to action this weekend, as Antonio Cairoli comes out of retirement to debut the new Ducati Desmo450 MX machine for the Ducati Factory MX Team! His presence means we have the winners of the last fifteen MXGP world titles on the start line at Arnhem!
As the season begins its final quarter, Tim Gajser continues to hold the red plate for Team HRC as he goes for his third GP win on Dutch sand, with Jorge Prado just 17 points back for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, while Herlings is lying 48 points behind the Slovenian.
Kay de Wolf will carry the red plate for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing into his home Grand Prix, but teammate Lucas Coenen cut his advantage down to 49 points with victory at Uddevalla. Simon Laengenfelder is third for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing and his race win at Lommel in July will bolster his confidence for the Dutch conditions!
The local fans will be trackside early on Sunday for the sixth and penultimate round of the WMX Women’s Motocross World Championship, currently being led by the self-titled “Queen of Sand” Lotte van Drunen, who holds a narrow three-point lead for De Baets Yamaha over Spanish rival Daniela Guillen, who will try to spoil the party on her RFME Spain National Team GASGAS! Most recent WMX winner Lynn Valk will also be fired up to perform in front of her home fans for Schmicker Racing KTM.
The EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing European Championship series holds its ninth round at Arnhem, and Fantic Factory Racing EMX125 star Noel Zanocz leads the standings by 18 points over home hero Gyan Doensen, who will enjoy massive support for Racestore KTM Factory Rookies. Another Dutch rising star, Dani Heitink, took a race win in Sweden and will be fired up for a good result in front of his local crowd!
Last weekend’s MXGP of Sweden saw the top two riders in the series get closer together in the race for the MXGP World Championship, with Prado scoring a double victory to counter Gajser’s win in the RAM Qualifying Race. While the Spaniard has yet to win an overall MXGP round in The Netherlands, he did win three in the MX2 category from 2017 to ’19. Gajser meanwhile has won twice in the Dutch sand, back in his first title season of 2015 in MX2, and in 2021 at the circuit of Oss. The Slovenian raced to two fifths last year at Arnhem, while Prado went 1-4 for 2nd overall.
Although the results from Uddevalla left Herlings with a bigger mountain to climb than before, there could be no better place than his home country for the all-time GP win record holder to strike back at his rivals and regain the momentum he had going before Sweden. Unable to compete last year at Arnhem after a crash on Saturday fractured his collarbone, he will be looking for Grand Prix win number 15 in his native country, and his first since 2020!
Outside of the big three, last year’s winner for Kawasaki Racing Team was Romain Febvre, which was his second victory on Dutch soil, while there is just one other rider lining up in the class who has a first-place trophy from The Netherlands.
That rider is one of the most intriguing wildcard entries yet to be seen in the class, as nine-time World Champion Antonio Cairoli makes a comeback ride as part of his development role for the mighty Ducati brand, and the Italian manufacturer’s long-awaited debut appearance could not have been made with a more esteemed ambassador for Italian Motocross. Winner of ten Grands Prix on Dutch ground, his appearance means that we have four of the seven most successful riders in Grand Prix history on the starting grid at Arnhem!
Other riders flying the Dutch flag include Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Calvin Vlaanderen, currently fourth in the series, and the Fantic Factory Racing duo Glenn Coldenhoff and Brian Bogers, who sit seventh and eleventh in the standings. Bogers will be back after a scary crash in Sweden put him out after six laps of Sunday’s action, and he’ll want the crowd to make some noise as he does the Official GoPro Lap before his home GP! Seven other wildcards will line-up from the host nation, as well as four-time British Champion Conrad Mewse, who returns for Crendon Tru7 Honda after showing good speed at the MXGP of Flanders.
It’s sure to be another battle royale amongst the Kingpins of MXGP at Arnhem!

Once more the pendulum of momentum in this spectacular season of MX2 racing swung a different way in Sweden, as Lucas Coenen took a stunning double win at Uddevalla and made ground on his red-plate-wearing teammate Kay de Wolf, who worked hard for fifth overall. The gap between the two is now just under a Sunday maximum score, at 49 points.
Both men are masters of the sand, although De Wolf has won at both Sardegna and Flanders this season. Kay missed the race at Arnhem last year through injury, whilst Lucas slipped off early in race one, denying him a perfect weekend as he recovered to 6th, his win in race two leaving him just two points away from the overall victory score of Liam Everts’ 3-2.
The Belgian comes to Arnhem a lonely 4th in the Championship for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, but appears to be growing in speed through a season that he started with a thumb injury. Third in the series is Simon Laengenfelder, winner of the opening race at Arnhem last season, who is on a three-GP podium streak in his bid to catch Lucas Coenen for the silver medal position. The German has still yet to win a Grand Prix this season and lies 23 points shy of the Belgian, and 72 behind De Wolf.
Monster Energy Triumph Racing are close to finishing their first year in MX2 with a top five rider in the series, with Mikkel Haarup just thirteen points ahead of reigning Champion Andrea Adamo, who took a brave second overall at Uddevalla.
Rick Elzinga, after a fine second overall for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 in the sand of Lommel, must be rubbing his hands approaching his home GP as he sits in seventh in the Championship standings. Fellow Dutchmen Jens Walvoort for KTM SB Racing and Kay Karssemakers for Fantic Factory Racing also sit in the top 20 of the series and are very keen for strong results. They are joined by two top EMX250 riders who enter as wildcards this weekend, Cas Valk of the Gabriel SS24 KTM team, and Ivano van Erp for VRT Yamaha. Cas won the first EMX250 race in Sweden, while Van Erp took the overall verdict with 2-2 finishes.

The sand races in MX2 this year have been absolute treats to watch, and this weekend should be no different, so watch out for thrills and spills at the MXGP of The Netherlands!
