Uddevalla, uno dei luoghi più longevi e consolidati del calendario MXGP, ha modificato il tracciato pietroso e compatto per generare più linee e punti di sorpasso per il Gran Premio di Svezia del 2024. Le modifiche hanno aumentato la tecnicità del percorso, ma le partenze erano ancora un premio per il potenziale podio. Una grande folla ha riempito le colline rocciose nel primo dei tre weekend consecutivi che porteranno il campionato nei Paesi Bassi e poi in Svizzera.

La gara di qualificazione RAM di sabato ha visto Jeffrey Herlings riprendersi da un incidente alla prima curva (quando non è riuscito a evitare un pilota caduto) per conquistare il 7° posto e recuperare alcuni punti del campionato, oltre ad assicurarsi un posto ragionevole nel cancello per le manche di domenica. Nella manche MX2 Liam Everts è arrivato 5°, con Sacha Coenen che si è curato le gambe doloranti dopo una caduta nelle prove, ma è riuscito a ottenere il 7° posto e Andrea Adamo si è classificato 10° nel suo ritorno alla classe.

Domenica Herlings è stato spinto fuori pista alla seconda curva della gara di apertura MXGP. Da quel momento, l’olandese è entrato in “modalità salvataggio” e solo un piccolo errore e una sosta a metà dell’ultimo giro gli hanno impedito di conquistare un discreto 4° posto. La partenza della seconda manche è stata migliore e si è subito piazzato in P2 al primo giro. Jeffrey ha cercato di avvicinarsi a Jorge Prado, in particolare attraverso i doppiati, e ci è andato vicino nell’ultima circolazione. Ha dovuto brevemente raccogliere e recuperare la moto #84 dopo una scivolata. Jeffrey ha subito un colpo alla mano sinistra ma si è assicurato il 2° posto e il 3° posto assoluto.

In MX2, Andrea Adamo ha guidato brillantemente per salire sul podio per la prima volta dal Gran Premio di West Nusa Tenggara (undicesimo round) e per una rimonta soddisfacente dopo la lesione al torace dalla Repubblica Ceca tre settimane fa. Adamo ha avuto una prestazione forte per assicurarsi il 4° posto in una prima manche statica. Everts era a più di 30 secondi di ritardo al 5° posto mentre Coenen entrava nella top ten con il 10° posto. La seconda gara ha consolidato la classifica generale con Andrea che ha ottenuto un comodo 2° posto. Liam stava lottando con i crampi allo stomaco ma ha tenuto duro per i 30 minuti e la distanza di 2 giri per un altro 5° posto. Anche Sacha ha perseverato e ha accumulato punti per il 12° posto.

Arnhem, sabbia e territorio di casa per Jeffrey Herlings ora sono in serbo mentre il Motorsportpark Gelderland ospita il sedicesimo Gran Premio della campagna e accoglie il campionato del mondo per il secondo anno consecutivo.

Jeffrey Herlings, 5° e 2° per il 3° posto assoluto in MXGP: “Non è stata una gara facile. Non avevo dove andare all’inizio sabato e questa non è sicuramente la pista più facile per sorpassare. Ho recuperato alcuni punti. Ho dovuto lavorare nella prima manche dopo essere stato spinto fuori: questo non ha aiutato. Una buona partenza è finalmente arrivata nella seconda manche. Ero dietro a Jorge [Prado] e ho mantenuto la distanza, ma poi ho avuto un bel sorpasso all’ultimo giro. Sono comunque riuscito a salire sul podio e ora ne abbiamo dieci di fila, quindi spero di continuare la serie. Il prossimo è Arnhem. Spero che la mia mano stia bene e che non mi faccia troppo male. Il GP di casa di solito ti dà sempre una piccola spinta in più e spero di poterlo usare a mio vantaggio”.

Andrea Adamo, 4° e 2° per il 2° posto assoluto in MX2: “Ero contento della mia guida e della mia velocità oggi. Avevo saltato un GP e stavo “dormendo” nella gara di qualificazione, quindi stamattina ho dovuto svegliarmi! Non ho avuto una partenza fantastica nella prima manche, ma ho fatto qualche sorpasso e ho finito abbastanza bene. Nella seconda ero quasi in testa, ma ho commesso un errore. Avevo bisogno di un po di giri per superare Simon [Laegenfelder] per il 2° posto, ma poi ho cercato di mantenere lo stesso ritmo per tutta la manche per vedere se ci fossero errori da parte di Lucas [Coenen], ma lui era forte e ho preso la P2. È stato bello tornare sul podio, soprattutto dopo aver saltato Lommel. Ero motivato a tornare… e spero che da ora fino alla fine della stagione potrò mantenere questo ritmo ed essere davanti.

Liam Everts, 5° e 5° per il 6° posto assoluto in MX2: “Mi sentivo abbastanza bene nella gara di qualificazione, anche se sono caduto e sono arrivato 5°: è andato tutto bene, niente di cui essere felici. Sono partito 8°-9° nella prima manche, sono arrivato 5° e le cose stavano andando bene, ma poi ho avuto dei crampi allo stomaco davvero forti. Non mi sentivo bene. Sono riuscito a finire 5°, ma tra le manche è stato davvero difficile e piuttosto caotico. Considerando tutto, sono stato felice di finire la seconda manche! Sono riuscito ad arrivare alla fine. Volevo di più dal weekend, ma è andata così”.

Sacha Coenen, 10° e 12° per l’11° posto assoluto in MX2: “Ho avuto un brutto incidente nelle prove cronometrate di ieri e mi sono fatto male alle gambe e alla caviglia, quindi oggi è stata dura. Ho fatto del mio meglio per correre e finire entrambe le manche era la cosa più importante… ma il risultato non è stato quello che volevamo. Penso che sarò a posto per la prossima settimana”.

Uddevalla, one of the longest-serving, time-honored venues on the MXGP calendar, altered the hard-packed stony layout to generate more lines and passing places for the 2024 Swedish Grand Prix. The changes increased the technicality of the course but starts were still at a premium for podium potential. A large crowd filled the rocky hillsides in the first of three consecutive weekends that will pull the championship to the Netherlands and then to Switzerland.

Saturday’s RAM Qualification race saw Jeffrey Herlings recover from a first turn crash (when he couldn’t avoid a fallen rider) to grab 7th and salvage some championship points as well as secure a reasonable slot in the gate for the motos on Sunday. In the MX2 Heat Liam Everts was 5th, with Sacha Coenen nursing sore legs after a tumble in practice but able to score 7th and Andrea Adamo ranked 10th in his comeback to the class.

On Sunday Herlings was nudged off the track around the second corner of the opening MXGP race. The Dutchman entered ‘salvage mode’ from that moment and only a small mistake and stall midway through the last lap prevented him from capturing a decent 4th place. The second moto start was better, and he immediately slotted into P2 on the first lap. Jeffrey tried to close to Jorge Prado, particularly through the backmarkers, and came close on the final circulation. He briefly had to pick-up and recover the #84 machine after a slip. Jeffrey sustained a bang to his left hand but made sure of 2nd place and 3rd overall.

In MX2, Andrea Adamo rode brightly to walk the rostrum for the first time since the Grand Prix of West Nusa Tenggara (round eleven) and for a satisfactory comeback after his torso lesion from the Czech Republic three weeks ago. Adamo performed strongly to make sure of 4th in a static first moto. Everts was more than 30 seconds behind in 5th as Coenen entered the top ten with 10th. The second race solidified the overall ranking with Andrea taking a comfortable 2nd. Liam was dealing with stomach cramps but gritted out the 30 minutes and 2 lap distance for another 5th. Sacha also persevered and banked points for 12th.

Arnhem, sand and home territory for Jeffrey Herlings now lies in store as the Motorsportpark Gelderland stages the sixteenth Grand Prix of the campaign and welcomes the world championship for the second year in a row.

Jeffrey Herlings, 5th and 2nd for 3rd overall in MXGP: “This wasn’t an easy one. I had nowhere to go at the start on Saturday and this is definitely not the easiest of tracks for passing. I got back some points. I had work to do in the first moto after being pushed out: this did not help. A good start finally arrived in the second moto. I was behind Jorge [Prado] and I kept the distance but then had a pretty big one on the last lap. I still managed to finish on the podium and we have ten in a row now so I hope to keep the streak going. Next up is Arnhem. I hope my hand will be OK and it doesn’t feel too bad. The home GP always gives you the extra little boost usually and I hope I can use that to my advantage.”

Andrea Adamo, 4th and 2nd for 2nd overall in MX2: “I was happy with my riding and speed today. I had missed one GP and I was ‘sleeping’ in the Qualification race so this morning I had to wake up! I didn’t have the best start in the first moto but I made some passes and finished pretty good. In the second I almost had the lead but made a mistake. I needed a few laps to pass Simon [Laegenfelder] for 2nd but then tried to keep the same pace the whole moto to see if there were any mistakes from Lucas [Coenen] but he was strong and I took P2. It was nice to get back on the podium, especially after missing Lommel. I was motivated to come back…and I hope from now until the end of the season I can keep this pace and be at the front.”

Liam Everts, 5th and 5th for 6th overall in MX2: “I was feeling pretty good in the qualifying race, even though I had a tumble and finished 5th: it was OK, nothing to get over-the-moon about. I started around 8-9th in the first moto, got up to 5th and things were going well but then I had really bad stomach cramps. I didn’t feel well. I managed to finish 5th but between the motos was really hard and pretty messy. Considering everything, I was happy to finish the second moto! I managed to make it to the end. I wanted more from the weekend but that’s the way it is.”

Sacha Coenen, 10th and 12th for 11th overall in MX2: “I had a big crash in Timed Practice yesterday and hurt my legs and ankle so it was hard today. I tried my best to race, and to finish both motos was the most important…but the result was not what we wanted. I think I will be OK for next week.”
