Levi Townley entra nella storia come primo pilota della bLU cRU YZ Cup a vincere il titolo mondiale di motocross junior
Al suo debutto sul suolo europeo al Campionato mondiale Junior Motocross 2024 a Heerde, nei Paesi Bassi, Levi Townley di Yamaha è entrato nella storia come il primo pilota della bLU cRU YZ Cup a vincere un titolo mondiale Junior Motocross. Il quattordicenne neozelandese si è assicurato il titolo della 85cc a bordo della sua YZ85 dopo un’enfatica vittoria in gara e un combattuto terzo posto in condizioni umide e difficili.
Godendosi la profonda sabbia olandese dello stretto e tecnico circuito Kamperweg Heerde, Townley ha messo in luce il suo talento con due prestazioni contrastanti ma ugualmente impressionanti.
In Gara Uno, Townley è partito con una partenza esplosiva, uscendo dalla prima curva in seconda posizione, alle calcagna dell’austriaco Moritz Ernecker. Attingendo all’abilità di corsa instillata da suo padre, l’ex campione del mondo MX2 Ben Townley, il giovane pilota ha eseguito in modo impeccabile. Ha capitalizzato un errore di Ernecker al quinto giro e ha continuato a dominare, concludendo infine la gara con un vantaggio di 4,5 secondi sul francese Sleny Goyer.
In Gara Due, Townley ha usato ancora una volta la sua intelligenza di gara e la sua incredibile tecnica mentre si lanciava in mezzo al gruppo dopo una partenza da metà gruppo. Il fuoriclasse della Yamaha è risalito fino alla seconda posizione prima di un piccolo errore e un ribaltamento nell’ultimo giro gli è costato la posizione. Tuttavia, il grintoso numero 26 ha effettuato una rapida rimonta e ha portato la sua YZ85 al terzo posto, il che è stato sufficiente per aggiudicarsi il campionato generale.
La storica vittoria di Townley non solo lo segna come il primo neozelandese a conquistare un titolo mondiale Junior Motocross, ma pone anche fine alla lunga attesa del titolo Yamaha nella classe 85cc, riaffermando la rinascita della YZ85.
Essendo il primo pilota bLU cRU a vincere un titolo mondiale Junior Motocross, e con anche suo fratello minore Jaggar che mostra enormi promesse e potenziale in pista, il futuro sembra luminoso.
Dai Paesi Bassi, i Townley intraprenderanno un viaggio di 30 ore per tornare in Nuova Zelanda. Tuttavia, la talentuosa famiglia tornerà in Europa per la SuperFinale della YZ85 bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup 2024, che si svolgerà al prestigioso Monster Energy Motocross of Nations a Matterley Basin, Winchester, Inghilterra, dal 4 al 6 ottobre.

Levi Townley Makes History as First bLU cRU YZ Cup Rider to Win Junior Motocross World TitleMaking his debut on European soil at the 2024 Junior Motocross World Championship in Heerde, The Netherlands, Yamaha’s Levi Townley made history as the first bLU cRU YZ Cup rider to win a Junior Motocross World Title. The 14-year-old New Zealander secured the 85cc title aboard his YZ85 after an emphatic race win and a hard-fought third-place finish in damp and challenging conditions. Revelling in the deep Dutch sand at the tight and technical Kamperweg Heerde circuit, Townley highlighted his talent with two contrasting but equally impressive performances.  In Race One, Townley got off to a dynamite start, emerging from turn one in second position, hot on the heels of Austrian Moritz Ernecker. Drawing on the race craft instilled by his father, former MX2 World Champion Ben Townley, the young rider executed flawlessly. He capitalized on an error by Ernecker on lap five and proceeded to dominate, eventually finishing the race with a commanding 4.5-second lead over Frenchman Sleny Goyer. In Race Two, Townley again used his race smarts and incredible technique as he charged through the field after a mid-pack start. The Yamaha star pushed as far up the ranks as second position before a small mistake, and a tip-over on the final lap cost him the position. Nevertheless, the gritty #26 made a quick remount and powered his YZ85 home in third place, which was enough to clinch the overall championship.  Townley’s historic victory not only marks him as the first New Zealander to claim a Junior Motocross World Title but also ends Yamaha’s lengthy title wait in the 85cc class, reaffirming the resurgence of the YZ85. As the first-ever bLU cRU rider to win a Junior Motocross World Title, and with his younger brother Jaggar also showing huge promise and potential on track, the future looks bright. From The Netherlands, the Townley’s will embark on a 30-hour journey back to New Zealand. However, the talented family is set to return to Europe for the 2024 YZ85 bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup SuperFinale, which will take place at the prestigious Monster Energy Motocross of Nations in Matterley Basin, Winchester, England, October 4-6. |
